Casts From the Past VII

Casts From the Past is a recurring retrospective of select Palladio GFRG projects.

With some installations, the only way to be absolutely sure of a perfect fit is a temporary assemblage in the studio. Here’s how this altar canopy or “baldacchino” will appear in its final venue.

This plaster cross will sit high atop the altar canopy (seen above). It will be ensconced on the very pawn-like base, in the middle picture, still mounted with the spinning profile that shaped it.

Any straight piece of moulding begins by pushing a sheet-metal profile through semi-liquid plaster. This method creates gorgeous, pristine pieces… and is also a great way to get your steps in!

After 12 years, a plaster studio accumulates a wealth of ornaments in a plethora of styles. Here’s a sample, affixed to one of our studio’s walls. And no, those aren’t shelves of wooden books: each holds a profile for recreating dozens of mouldings.
