Casts From the Past XI

Casts From the Past is a recurring retrospective of select Palladio GFRG projects.

Eschewing the acanthus for palm-like fronds gave this NYC residential project a more Floridian feel. We made them in three separate tiers to be assembled and installed on site.

A number of complications are inherent in the simplicity of a fluted entasis column. A plain column with the requisite “bulge” is used to create a reverse mold. Diminishing fillets are added and a cast is made. That cast then gets curved terminations to the ends of its flutes. A final mold is then made.

Emerging from the volutes of this capital, these leafy drooping sculpts were added for an extra injection of opulence.

When it came to a theater lobby renovation in Ohio, even the air return vents – which were surrounded by these circular cornucopia – became a nexus for some stunning plaster works.

Here’s a shot of a silicone pour in progress. Even though we vacuum out the air, we like to pour it in a thin stream, to reduce the “bubblage” to near absolute zero.
