Ionic and Doric columns can be differentiated by the “hair-do” of their capitals. Doric have a simple flat-top and the Ionic show their curls with volutes, like in this Scamozzi capital. For more, visit https://palladio.com/architecture-i
Whenever you see a profusion of acanthus topped off by the curls of volutes, you’re probably looking at a Corinthian capital. This one is destined for a project in South Dakota.
All egg-and-dart mouldings were originally carved from a profile known as the “ovolo”. Or as any lumber store retailer would call the rightmost profile in the second pic: a quarter round.
The inspiration for classical ornamentation often erupted from the plainness of a piece. Reproduced by our studio, the concave semi-circle of the torus profile grew into ribbon-bundled bay leaves.
