Casts From the Past XVIII
Casts From the Past is a recurring retrospective of select Palladio GFRG projects.
We were pretty chuffed that our San Francisco project was pictured in January 2021’s Architectural Digest. In the blogs, we’ll be posting some behind-the-scene studio pics of what you could see in the magazine.
As elaborate as wall panels can be, they’re all reducible to the parts that comprise them. Here are those pieces – straight and cornered – freshly cast and drying on the studio racks.
Accessorized with capitals and plinths and other accoutrements found on columns, pilasters and columns are sometimes confused with one another. However, a pilaster – like this one destined to flank a doorway – doesn’t support any weight or structures. They get by on their looks alone. 😊
This bouquet of rosettes will bloom along a stairway stringer – the supporting structure for stairs. If you noticed that these pieces are not plaster, but resin, then you’ve got a good eye… and WAY too much time on your hands. 😊
Creating plaster moulding is known as “running”. A typical length – like this beam enclosure for a Long Island residence – is 24’. Done by hand, it requires about 45 minutes and one very skilled craftsman.
